George Clinton Funky Book Signing and Costume Look-Alike Contest At Ben’s Chili Bowl

You’re invited!
DATE:  Saturday, November 1st
TIME:  12:30pm
PLACE:  Ben’s Chili Bowl, 1213 U Street, NW, Washington, DC  20009

Ben’s Chili Bowl, in partnership with The Oracle Group, is proud to host the legendary George Clinton, founder and leader of Parliament Funkadelic, on Saturday, November 1st at 12:30pm as he meets people and signs copies of his new book, Brothas Be Yo, Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You? This book is the long-awaited memoir from one of the greatest bandleaders, hit makers, and most influential pop artists of our time—known for over forty R&B hit singles—P-Funk’s George Clinton.

As an added post-Halloween treat, we will also present a GEORGE CLINTON LOOK-ALIKE CONTEST, and the winner will receive a free, signed copy of his book along with a free lunch for two at Ben’s Chili Bowl.  Please come dressed as funky as you want, and George will personally choose the one who best personifies the true P-Funk vibe as he has projected for decades!

For over 56 years, Ben’s Chili Bowl has been famous for bringing great food and a soulful, funky family experience to guests from all over.  Since opening in 1958, Ben’s jukebox has been pumping music that connects people from all backgrounds in a celebration of life and good times.  And since the early 1970s, George Clinton has been responsible for a huge amount of the music that is the life-blood of Ben’s Chili Bowl.

George Clinton began his musical career in New Jersey, where his obsession with doo-wop and R&B led to a barbershop quartet—literally, as Clinton and his friends also styled hair in the local shop—the way kids often got their musical start in the ’50s. But how many kids like that ended up playing to tens of thousands of rabid fans alongside a diaper-clad guitarist? How many of them commissioned a spaceship and landed it onstage during concerts? How many put their stamp on five decades of pop music, from the mind-expanding sixties to the hip-hop-dominated nineties and beyond?

One of them. That’s how many.

Few people can truly be called living legends.  Even fewer can lay claim to having significantly impacted pop culture at all, much less for five decades.  George Clinton is one of the very few who has done all this and more, and he has done it in a way that brought a high level of musicality and depth while at the same time projecting a playful and extravagant persona that remains uniquely unparalleled.

We look forward to having you with us for a very special, very funky Saturday afternoon!
