BENScommunityDay2014On Saturday, October 4th, please join the Ali family as Ben’s Chili Bowl hosts its first Community Day in Arlington, VA.  For over 56 years, Ben’s has been an integral part of the Washington, DC community.  In fact, 80-year-old co-founder Virginia Ali is affectionately known throughout the city as ‘Mom’ simply because she has touched so many lives over the years and still continues to do so.  She has also taught her children and all Ben’s employees to share the same love for everyone in the community that they are so fortunate to serve.

In spite of all the worldwide recognition and fame that the iconic eatery has garnered over the years, local residents of DC, Maryland and Virginia know the real truth about Ben’s Chili Bowl, and that truth is simple.  They know that Ben’s is first and foremost about FAMILY and COMMUNITY.  For more than 56 years, Ben’s has graciously served the people, and every guest has always been embraced as family. When segregation was still alive, Ben’s offered a peaceful gathering place and safe haven for ALL people, regardless of any differences in background or perspective. Society has grown and changed, but Ben’s remains the same and continues to celebrate people from all walks of life as they come together to eat, laugh, and discuss life as they see it.

Now, a new chapter has begun in Arlington and Ben’s is happy to invite everyone in the community to come out and enjoy a wonderful day of giving and celebrating life.  Here are some of the highlights:

Ben’s Chili Bowl presents DC Proud: ‘Mayor For Life’ Book Signing & DMV Honors

On Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 7:00pm, a press conference will be hosted by the Ali family honoring a few of DC’s heroes.  The press conference will present a Mayor For Life book signing with former DC Mayor and current Ward 8 City Councilman Marion Barry plus DC’s Boxing Heroes launching the DMV Honors Celebrity Weekend of Champions presented by GFS Entertainment Group.

Ben’s will host a discussion and book signing for Former DC Mayor and current Ward 8 City Councilman, Marion S. Barry, Jr.’s book Mayor for Life: The Incredible Story of Marion Barry, Jr’ which was released by Strebor Books|Simon & Schuster on June 18, 2014.  Mr. Barry and the Ali family are longtime friends, as his friendship began years ago with the late Ben Ali, Founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl.

“My friendship with the Ali Family extends to almost 50 years.  The restaurant’s founder, Ben Ali, was a visionary who, because of his business acumen, successfully extended the Ben Chili Bowl brand nationally.  Ben was someone who truly loved this City.  I remember vividly that he was one of few business owners who allowed his establishment to remain open after the 1968 disorder; and who decided to remain open during the Metro construction, despite the toll the construction took on his business.”  He continues, “My longtime friend and his lovely wife, Virginia Ali and her children, have continued to run the business. They have done an exceptional job in preserving the brand; by remaining a mainstay in our community; and have successfully expanded their business beyond the ‘U’ Street corridor.  I am honored by their support,” says Mr. Barry.

GFS Entertainment Group and DMV Honors are elated to be part of such an historic event.  DC PROUD is precisely equivalent to what DMV Honors represents.  DMV Honors Celebrity Weekend of Champions will take place September 18 – 20 in Washington, DC and will be making history by honoring DC’s boxing heroes from the 1990’s until early 2000 era.  World Champions such as Sharmba ‘Little Big Man’ Mitchell, Keith Holmes, Mark ‘Too Sharp’ Johnson, William Joppy, Winky Wright and Demarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley will receive the Sugar Ray Leonard Award given by DC’s boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard; there will also include a host of Honorable Mentions.  Visit for more information.
